Union artillery superiority was often times matched by excellent positions held by Confederate gunners.Had the union artillerists held beter or equal positions would Confederate artillery have been decimated or could they have held their ground,also did the types of projectiles and their use apply to their successes or downfalls?

At 2nd Manassas the South controlled the Field with their Artillery. Also, at the Battle of Sharpsburg the most fearful shells used by the South were pieces of Railroad rail.
